Cantabria is one of the great destinations for hiking lovers. Among the different routes of Spain, is one of our favorites. It is the itinerary “Under Picos de Europa“, located at the foot of these spectacular mountains. It presents a circular route, reason why you will not return by the same way that you have gone. Total: 9 kilometers of road that we can walk on foot in 3 hours.
Hiking route “Under Picos de Europa”
Our hiking trail begins in Mogrovejo, in the valley of Liébana. It is a rural town with a lot of charm, which has become famous for being the site where Heidi’s film was shot (directed by Alain Gsponer, year 2015). In Mogrovejo you will find a bar to take power and free parking to leave the car. From the parking begins the itinerary “Under Picos de Europa“, perfectly indicated with a low difficulty. It is ideal to do it alone or with family.
From experience, the best option to start the itinerary to the left of the parking, just at the foot of the medieval tower. On this side, the road starts from the highest point and descends gently.
So, following the road next to the tower of Mogrovejo, we find a first section for forest and meadow. It is a recommendable route in summer since most of the way you will do it under the leftover of the trees. Even so, do not forget to take a cap or hat to protect you from the sun in summer.
The first half of the route runs along an agricultural road, wide and fairly flat. If you have patience, you probably see some squirrels. It can be said that the landscape is amazing. As you go up, you will see the mountain closer.
Following the road you will find the River Seco O Belondio. In its clear waters you can stop to rest, refresh yourself and take some spectacular photos.
Following the path, now descending, we arrive to Tanarrio. It is another of the charming municipalities and an example of the traditional architecture of Liébana. Gradually their houses are restored and reoccupied, but retains a unique atmosphere. In the streets seems to have stopped the time.
Finally, we only have to get back to Mogrovejo. We will pass through the Seco O Belondio, now wider, to follow the path up to the parking.
Hiking recommendations:
- If you want to do it in summer, wake up early. The best time is at 9 in the morning, so you will have finished for lunch. In addition, you will still have free parking in the area.
- Water, sunscreen and cap are essential on hot days.
- Follow the road signs. You will recognize them by two parallel bars, one yellow and white, next to the itinerary. If you see the bars like a cross, that is not a road.
- Avoid doing this itinerary after days of intense rain. Otherwise, you will find large ponds that will stop you from passing and rivers overflowing.
