If you are an artist, collector or art lover, take the agenda. Today we present a selection of the most outstanding art fairs for this 2019. Organized chronologically, these are some of the most important fairs of Europe. There you can meet young artists, new trends, recognized authors and galleries from around the world.
Art Rotterdam – February 7-10
Art Rotterdam is one of the most popular event in the city. For a week, this Dutch city hosts openings, exhibitions in museums, conferences and several cultural activities (in addition to other fairs). For this reason, Art Rotterdam goes beyond the typical contemporary art fair. It is a way to connect with the art that is inside and outside the galleries. The fair will take place in the legendary Van Nelle factory, an icon of the Dutch industrial style of the early twentieth century.
ARCO Madrid – February 27 – March 3
Undoubtedly, ARCO is the most important contemporary art fair in Spain and one of the most outstanding in the Ibero-American sphere. Year after year, the organization and the galleries have worked to position themselves as one of the leading art fairs in southern Europe. This 2019 will host 203 galleries from 30 countries, figures that reveal the magnitude of this event.
At ARCO Madrid we can find buyers of all types (museums, foundations, private collectors of all levels …), in addition to a traditional connection with architecture and design. Proof of this is that this year’s edition will feature a VIP Room created by Lázaro Rosa Violán Studio, in collaboration with the magazine AD.
Art Up ! – February 28 – March 3
For many French galleries and talent scouts, Art Up! It is one of the most important events of your calendar. Every year it gathers more than 100 galleries in the Grand Palais and a final balance of 40,000 visitors. This 2019 arrives this year to its twelfth edition and does so by placing photography as a transversal theme. Without a doubt, it is an opportunity to learn about the latest trends in the Gallic country and the newest artists. Art Up! is known above all for its great diversity of works, all of quality, presented in an environment as elegant as care.
Affordable Art Fair – March 7-10
The first edition of Affordable Art Fair was in 1999. The chosen place was the old Battersea power station (London), an industrial building that seemed to advance to the highly anticipated TATE Modern. The objective of that first edition was to offer the public works of contemporary art, quality and made by recognized artists, but at an affordable price. Since then, regular editions have been held throughout the world.
This March they celebrate the 20 years of that first fair and the chosen place will be Battersea again. In this remember, visitors can access 1000 works by contemporary artists, represented by gallery experts. All these works will be for sale, with “affordable” prices, ranging from £ 100 to £ 6,000.
Art Paris – April 4 – 7
6,500 square meters, 150 exhibitors, 1000 represented artists and an average of 60,000 visitors. The figures of Art Paris warn us that it’s a fair of first level. Year after year, it gathers national and international galleries and artists at the Grand Palais (practically equal parts). Unlike Art Up !, here we will find more established artists and higher prices, although the organization is betting on younger talent. For this, he has created the “Promises” section in the center of the Palace, a space with which he wants to support young galleries and emerging artists.
Miart – April 5 – 7
The international fair of modern and contemporary art Miart is one of the most important artistic events in Italy. Painting, photography and sculpture come together in Milan to expose the best of national and international art. Due to its importance, it has become an event of almost obligatory assistance for companies and professionals. Artists, galleries, collectors, dealers, curators, specialists, representatives of museums, institutions and even libraries will meet, once again, at Miart. This year will coincide on dates with Art Paris.
Art Cologne – April 11 – 14
The oldest art fair is Art Cologne. Or, at least, that’s what their organizers say. Even thought, Art Cologne is one of the most important contemporary art fairs in Germany (and Europe). This 2019 will host 200 galleries representing 2,000 artists, from world-renowned authors to young promises. Therefore, it is a must for every good collector and art lover.
Art Photo Barcelona – May 3 – 5
Art Photo Barcelona is the most prominent emerging photography festival in the Catalan capital. Since its inception, six years ago, it has been a meeting point between authors, artistic circuit and art lovers. For this reason, it is also an event where the young photographers work and connect with agents and galleries.
Photo London – May 16 – 19
Since its beginning five years ago, Photo London has established itself as a premier international photography fair. A showcase for international artists, it is also an event to learn about the latest dynamics of the English capital. If you like photography or you are a photographer and you are looking for inspiration, you can not miss this event. Nearly 100 galleries from around the world will be exhibiting, as well as talks and prizes have been organized.
Photo London will take place at Somerset House, one of the most beautiful and spectacular centers of culture and art in the city.
Art Basel – June 13 – 16
Like the Affordable Art Fair, Art Basel organizes various art fairs around the world. The first of this year will take place in Basel (Switzerland). It will feature the most important galleries, which show the works of more than 4,000 artists. As usual, during these days there will be exhibitions and talks throughout the region. It should be noted that Basel has 37 museums, being a great opportunity to be seduced by history and art.
Art Berlin – September 12 – 15
This year takes place the second edition of Art Berlin. It was born from the collaboration of Abc art berlin contemporary and Art Cologne and little by little it is becoming a place in the contemporary art market. They exhibit local and international galleries, which exhibit works in painting and sculpture mainly.
As a curiosity, this fair will take place not in a fairground, but in the historic Tempelhof airport.
Frieze London – October 3 – 6
The Frieze art fair is much more than a fair, it is part of the History of Art. It emerged from the hands of the creators of Frieze magazine and was the first contemporary art fair in London. Since then, it has consolidated as a first level event. Collectors, celebrities and first class artists come together in this innovative and exclusive fair. It is celebrated in Regent’s Park, a space that during these days is transformed into an international capital of art. Painting, sculpture, film, music, talks and impossible performances make Frieze one of the best fairs in the world to meet the most famous contemporary artists, but also the young promises of art.
These are some of the most important art fairs in Europe. Even so, the art market goes much further. Alternative art fairs, congresses or even design fairs are other events in which you can meet artists and young talents directly. In addition, the Internet and social networks are a platform with great potential where you can discover artists from all over the world.
See you in the next post 😉
