Handmade fashion arrived in our country some years ago. It emerged as an alternative to massive, depersonalized mass production of large multinationals. On clothing, shoes, furniture or even stationery, the “handmade” label began to take place in the market.
The idea of handmade is not new. In fact, it has always been there. As opposed to industrial production, handmade products bring added value: custom-made, quality and small quantities or exclusive.
But in addition to the method of manufacture, the idea of handmade is closely linked to the image of artisans and craftsmen and their way of life. Committed to know-how, there are many who have already been able to combine traditional techniques with the latest innovations. As we saw in the last post, the internet has opened the doors to young professionals who manufacture their products with their own hands.
Years ago it was hard to imagine that new generations would prefer the countryside to the city or the workshop to the office. And it is that the idea of handmade connects, directly, with many of the aspirations of the millennials.
Handmade design: creativity as protagonist
More and more we find designers and brands who are betting on handmade products. Today we present some examples of professionals who have found their place in the market thanks to this philosophy and they are a reference.
In 2013, Lucía Ruiz de Assín started the Deassin project. Since then, she has made jewels that are true works of art. Minimalists and contemporary, their jewels are an example of handmade product elaborated in a professional way. As she well says “The jewel is a means of artistic expression and the body a suggestive starting point”.
This way of conceiving the product is what makes each jewel so exclusive and not an astronomical price. If you enter in her website you will see that they are pieces for all occasions, with their own style and for all pockets.
Sockaholic is a Spanish socks brand based in Madrid. So far it might seem normal, but you will see how original and daring are. The project was born in 2011 around a group of friends who had the successful idea of creating an online store from which to sell high quality cotton socks. They opted for a fresh and urban image, offering a product of an excellent quality.
Sockaholic socks can be found in major capitals. You can also buy them through the online store. If you enter, you will discover that the price is as attractive as the design of the socks.
The Handle drop has born in 2015 by three anonymous designers and it is a young project that bets on high quality handmade fashion. Its founders conceived this brand in three pillars: quality, exclusivity and artisan design. They make handbags made from Italian leather of the highest quality. Contrasts, mystery, geometry or vanguard are some adjectives with which describe their models.
Handle drop offers various product lines, all functional and manufactured in Spain.
The company is committed to the origin of the skins they use. Handle drop applies responsible production standards, using only animal skins raised on farms to obtain meat.
If you visit the website you will discover that the prices are very competitive. They are an example of how artisanal and responsible processing should not necessarily be expensive.
We finished the post with an example focused on the footwear: Labelfree. Labelfree was born in Elche, a city with a long tradition in the manufacture of shoes. Fed up to see how the middlemen, distributors and points of sale increase the price, they decided to shorten the distance to the final customer. They explain that some shoes that can have a cost € 30 and you finally pay € 150 for them.
Front this situation, they decided to offer shoes without intermediaries. From the factory to Labelfree and from they to the end customer. In this way the intermediaries and the final price is reduced.
These are just a few examples of handmade fashion, which has turned out to be a reflection of a lifestyle. The fact of being manufactured by handmade resurface old trades that were believed to be lost or obsolete. And, perhaps most important, the price of their products is extremely competitive. Without losing exclusivity, they have managed to find their place in the market.
